End of an Era: Ayatollah Alama Agha Syed Baqir Al-Kashmiri Passes Away at 85

Srinagar: WTNS:April 18: Ayatollah Alama Agha Syed Mohammad Baqir Almosavi Al-Safvi Najafi, one of the South Asia’s most revered clerics, passed away at the age of 85 in Srinagar on Friday.

The esteemed Kashmiri cleric, distinguished theologian, mystic, philosopher, orator, historian, critic, researcher, and jurist Ayatollah Alama Agha Syed Mohammad Baqir Al-Mosavi Alsafvi Najafi departed after a brief illness in the early hours of Friday at SMHS Hospital, Srinagar.

Sources confirmed that Alama Agha Syed Baqir, who had been unwell for quite some time, experienced a significant deterioration in his health over the past couple of days.

His notable writings earned recognition and accolades in Iraq, Iran, and outside India. His contributions were honored with the Shaheed Murtaza Mutahhari Award, acknowledging his profound impact on Islamic scholarship.

Wilayat Times reports, as news of his demise spread, thousands of people across Kashmir marched towards the late leader’s residence in Budgam.

Born on March 21, 1940, in a prominent Mosavi Agha family of Budgam, Alama Agha Syed Baqir commenced his early education at Jamia Babul Ilm in Mirgund Budgam and later pursued higher Islamic studies in Najaf Asharaf and Qom under the most renowned scholars of that time.

In addition to his scholarly pursuits, Alama Agha Syed Baqir was a distinguished poet and published numerous books in various languages.

Cutting across the lines of sects and religions, his demise was widely condoled by socio-religious and political dignitaries and organizations in Iran, Iraq, and India, particularly in Jammu and Kashmir.

The late Agha was laid to rest at his ancestral Asthan-e-Alia in Budgam.

Sea of people gathered on Friday to participate in the funeral prayers of Kashmir’s renowned spiritual and religious figure Alama Agha Syed Mohammad Baqir Almosavi, popularly known as Agha Soab.

CM Omer Abdullah along with several MLA`s and officials reached Budgam to attend funeral prayer of Late Scholar.

Agha Syed Mohammad Baqir Almosavi (1940-2025) was one of the most prominent religious scholars in Islamic history. As an author of over many books on various aspects of Islam, his work sought to defend the Islamic scholarly tradition and articulate its authority in an era of significant religious and political change.(WTNS)
