Papa is in the Drum:The Dark Truth behind Domestic Murders

wilayattimes (Jammu and Kashmir)

Women murdering their husbands with the help of their lovers, or vice versa, is one of the most heartbreaking incidents that has ever happened and continues to happen. Unfortunately, it will likely continue in the future as well. To our great surprise, we may see such crimes increasing day by day. Security forces are doing their best to stop these crimes, and there is no doubt about that, but it’s still not enough; in fact, it’s not even close to enough. Hard work done in the wrong way never pays off. The law shouldn’t be blind, but alas, it is. You may have heard about Saurabh Rajput’s murder.

Saurabh Rajput, a former Merchant Navy officer who was currently working in London, had come to Meerut, India, to celebrate his 6-year-old daughter’s birthday on March 3, 2025. But instead of celebrating, he was murdered by his wife, Muskaan Rastogi, and her lover, Sahil Shukla. They drugged Saurabh, stabbed him, and then chopped his body into 15 pieces. They placed his body parts in a plastic drum and sealed it with wet cement. Their daughter then told the people that “Papa Drum Mai Hai” [ Papa is in the drum]

This murder has caught the attention of people and is making rounds on social media. But that’s not all. In Rajasthan, another woman named Gopali Devi, a resident of Sanganer, killed her husband Dhanna Lal Saini, a vegetable vendor, with the help of her lover, Deendayal Kushwaha. They then set his body on fire in a nearby forest to hide the evidence. During interrogation, Devi admitted that she had been in a relationship with Kushwaha for several years.

In Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, a man named Imran Khan killed his wife, Shabnam, and burned her body in a cowshed on October 4, 2024.

In another case, a woman and her lover were arrested for killing her husband in Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir. According to the investigation, Shaista, the wife of Riyaz Ahmad Mir, lodged a complaint stating that her husband had gone missing after leaving home on the night of November 30 and December 1. The police initiated an on-site search, and with the help of locals, they found Mir’s body in a trench at his house, covered with a lid. Police retrieved the body from the trench. During questioning, Shaista confessed that she, along with her lover Waseem Akram Lone, killed her husband during the night and hid his body in the trench. [Times of India]

Isn’t it heartbreaking? A jaw-dropping and unbelievable crime? But we have normalized such crimes. I must blame Bollywood for that first of all, as Bollywood normalizes gambling, smuggling, the use of abusive language, pornography, and even murder. In movies like *Pushpa*, *Animal*, and others, these themes are portrayed. I won’t mention all the movies, as I do not want to promote them.

Incidents like these didn’t occur suddenly; the process of crime began right after the marriage. Though murderers who are caught red-handed should be punished severely, there are more people involved whom no one is talking about. I have witnessed many cases of girls being forced into marriages against their will. They are made to leave the person they love simply because religion or societal norms do not allow it! So, secondly, I must blame society and religions. Society and religions are the murderers as well. I will receive a lot of destructive criticism for this, but that doesn’t stop me from doing my job as a columnist. I hear it all the time that having a lover is totally prohibited in religions, and marriage is seen as genuine, but when the girl confesses her relationship, her parents beat her up, lock her in, and even force her to abandon her lover. Why? Because religion says it’s wrong! And at the same time, society says it’s wrong as well. How is it wrong to marry someone you love? And how is it not wrong to force girls to marry someone they don’t love? Isn’t it a crime in itself? Why doesn’t society give women the right to choose their partner? If religion says it’s “Haram,” then why don’t parents allow them to make it “Halal” by simply marrying their daughters to the person they like? So, in my opinion, the parents of girls who kill their husbands are equally responsible for the crime in most cases, as is society. Such parents are the actual criminals. You cannot mentally torture a person so much that they feel compelled to commit a crime and then request the law to hang them. It’s you who should be hanged! Hypocrisy is at its peak!

This is a serious crime and shouldn’t be taken as a joke. But unfortunately, when you scroll through Instagram reels, you will find thousands of videos where such crimes are displayed as jokes. People are laughing, commenting with hilarious words, and sharing them! How insane. People used to fight against criminals back then, but now they are busy making and consuming cringe content!

The law shouldn’t be blind, but it is. It’s not addressing the root causes of crimes but instead arresting and releasing people. In a nutshell, whatever is happening these days is simply the result of a process that has been going on for years, unnoticed. And there aren’t just one or two criminals involved. The whole society, the parents, everyone is complicit. Rather than trimming the thorns of the cactus, we should uproot the entire plant if we want to eliminate the crime.
